The Grand Ducal Palace was once Luxembourg City's first town hall, dating back to 1418. After the town hall was destroyed in 1554, it was rebuilt 20 years later in 1574. The wrought-iron balustrade built in 1741 still exists today, and in the mid-18th-century a Baroque-style building enlarged the town hall.
